Glossary

For your convenience, the team at Red Dot Buildings has compiled all the terms we use in reference to our services:

  • Allowance(s) – An allocated sum of money in a construction contract for items not specified in the contract, such as an underlayment material for tile flooring or an electrical allowance for fixtures.

  • Architectural Drawing – A drawing that depicts the plan and/or elevation views of a proposed building to showcase its overall appearance.

  • Bill of Materials – A comprehensive list of every part number or description of materials and assemblies to be shipped for a project.

  • Building Code – The minimum legal requirements set by governing agencies that cover all types of construction.

  • Building Permit – A written authorization issued by the relevant governmental authority that allows construction to commence on a specific project in accordance with approved drawings and specifications.

  • Circuit Breaker – A switch-like device usually located in the circuit breaker box or electrical breaker panel. Its purpose is to shut off the power and limit the amount of power flowing through a circuit, measured in amperes.

  • Collateral Loads – The weight of additional permanent materials, such as sprinklers, mechanical and electrical systems, ceilings, and partitions required by the contract, aside from the Building System.

  • Column – A vertical main member used in a building to transfer loads from trusses, main roof beams, or rafters to the foundation.

  • Cross Section – A depiction of a building structure from the side that shows what it would look like if cut in half on a vertical plane, revealing internal components that would not otherwise be visible.

  • Dead Loads – The weight of all permanent construction materials in a building, such as roofing, floor, framing, and covering members.

  • Downspout – A conduit used to carry water from the building's gutter.

  • Fabrication – The manufacturing process performed in a plant to convert raw material into finished Metal Building System components, including cutting, cold forming, punching, cleaning, welding, and painting.

  • Facade – An architectural treatment that partially covers a wall and usually conceals the eave and/or rake of the building.

  • Fascia – A decorative panel or trim protruding from a wall's face.

  • Flashing – A metal component used to cover the juncture of two planes of material.

  • Footing – A pad or mat, often made of concrete, located under a column, wall, or other structural member, used to distribute loads into the soil.

  • Foundation – The substructure that supports a building or other development.

  • Galvanized – Steel that is coated with zinc for corrosion resistance.

  • Grout – A mixture of sand, cement, and water used to fill cavities or cracks, sometimes applied under leveling or base plates to attain more uniform bearing surfaces.

  • Gutter – A light gauge metal member designed to direct water from the roof toward a drain.

  • Installation – The process of assembling fabricated Metal Building System components on-site to create a completed structure.

  • Insulation – Any material used in building construction to reduce heat transfer.

  • Metal Building System – An integrated set of interdependent assemblies and components that constitute a building.

  • Millwork – Finished wood building materials manufactured in millwork plants, including window and door frames, doors, mantels,  blinds, panelwork, moldings, stairway components, and interior trim, but not including flooring, ceiling, or siding.

  • Retrofit – The process of placing new metal roof or wall systems over deteriorated roofs and walls.

  • Screw Down Roof System – A roof system comprised of panels connected directly to the roof substructure with fasteners.

  • Stud – A vertical wall component used to attach external or internal materials, such as coverings or support structures.

  • Truss – A construction consisting of three or more members, each designed to support a tension or compression force, which then acts as a unified beam.
